Cambridge College Reads Book Club for Spring 2019
Cambridge College Reads Book Club has selected "A Kind of Solitude" by Dariel Suarez for our Spring 2019 book.

Last semester, the CELT [Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching] launched the first Cambridge College Reads Book Club, and together, students, faculty and staff read The Book of the Unknown Americans. Fifty copies of the book were distributed to interested parties (primarily in Boston), and CELT hosted three events: an interview with the author and two book discussions.
This semester, CELT is continuing with the Cambridge College Reads Book Club centered around the semester’s theme of “Immigration, Migration, Displacement, and Community.” We will be reading a collection of short stories called A Kind of Solitude by Dariel Suarez, a local Boston author and Director of Core Programs and Faculty at GrubStreet writer’s group.
The stories in his book are all set in Cuba in the years following the fall of the Soviet Union. They are sometimes odd, sometimes bleak, and explore themes of isolation, poverty, and perseverance in a politically-repressed society.
We are pleased to announce that we have several copies of the book on hand for anyone who would like to read it and join us for the launch or story discussions. Again, we will have three events around the book here in Boston, but we are also making all of the events available via ZOOM so that students, faculty, and staff from any campus can participate. The three event dates and topics are:
February 27th - 4:30-5:45: Book Launch with Author reading and signing!
March 13th - 4:30-5:45: Discussion 1 on two short stories TBA
April 24th - 4:30-5:45: Discussion 2 on two short stories TBA
We are very excited to host of the second semester of the Cambridge College Reads Book Club and invite anyone from the Cambridge College community who is interested to join us. However, we only have a limited number of books available to distribute. If you would like to read with us and think you can make at least one of the events in person or via ZOOM, please email CELT@cambridgecollege.edu to reserve your copy.
